Gunmen kidnapped three staff members of the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) who were on an inspection tour of Kalamatoru community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State on Saturday.

Sources at the State Security Service (SSS) in Bayelsa State say the captors have made contact with the families and are demanding a ransom of N400 million.

The source noted that the DPR has asked the SSS to stay back in the negotiations as they are actively pursuing it.

Bayelsa State has one of the highest densities of kidnap rates in Nigeria. Additionally, last week, five security officers were gruesomely murdered at their base on Nembe waterfront.
