Amaechi’s Screening Deferred To Thursday Due To Delayed Report Alleging Financial Misconduct

October 14, 2015

The Senate decided to defer the Wednesday screening of Mr. Rotimi Amaechi to Thursday, due to the failure of the Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions to submit its report on the petition against Mr. Amaechi. With the deferment of Mr. Amaechi’s screening, the total number of ministerial nominees for Wednesday is reduced to nine.

The Senate decided to defer the Wednesday screening of Mr. Rotimi Amaechi to Thursday, due to the failure of the Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions to submit its report on the petition against Mr. Amaechi. According to Premium Times the Integrity Group, an organization dedicated to promoting transparency in Nigerian politics, called for the petition.  The organization cited unanswered questions regarding financial misappropriation of Mr. Amaechi’s administration during his governorship of Rivers State as the cause for their petition.

Mr. Sam Anyanwu, the Chairman of the Committee, informed the Senate that the Committee could not meet on Tuesday due to the late adjournment of the plenary.  According to Mr. Anyanwu several members of the Committee were “too tired to meet”.  However, Mr. Anyanwu assured the Senate that the Committee would meet on Wednesday in order to finalize their report on Mr. Amaechi.

The Committee did meet on Monday, but were unable to review the petition as the allegations contained within it were before a court of competent jurisdiction.

With the deferment of Mr. Amaechi’s screening, the total number of ministerial nominees for Wednesday is reduced to nine.

Among the other nominees to be screened are Chris Ngige (former Anambra State Governor), Babatunde Fashola (former Lagos Governor), and Dr. Ibe Kachikwu (Head of Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation).
