In a case brought before the court by National Conscience Party (NCP), the Lagos State Government was challenged for refusing to conduct elections in all the Local Government Areas (LGA) in the State. Rather than hold democratic elections, the State had set up and maintained "Caretaker Committees" to manage the Local Government offices.
NCP's suit told the court to declare the Local Government Caretakers unconstitutional and order the State to conduct elections into the Local Government offices.
In a ruling by Justice A.M. Lawal today he upheld the case brought by the NCP. The court declared the use of caretakers as unconstitutional and ordered that an election be conducted within 30 days in the various Local Government Offices.
