SaharaReporters has obtained video of Biafran activists protesting for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the controversial Director of Radio Biafra, outside the Nigerian embassies in New Delhi, India and Tokyo, Japan. Mr. Kanu has been detained by officials attached to the Department of State Services (DSS) for nearly two weeks.

According to Mr. Kanu’s lawyer, Egechukwu Obetta, he has was arrested at a hotel in Ikeji, Lagos shortly after arriving from the United Kingdom. Mr. Kanu has been granted bail, but his conditions have been so strict that he has not been able to meet them. The conditions include a N10 million fine and confinement to the Abuja area in residence of a government employee with the ranking of G-16 or higher, according to Mr. Obetta.

Protesters outside the embassy in New Delhi, seen in the video chanting songs and carrying Biafran flags, demanded Mr. Kanu’s release in the next 24 hours.

This protest comes at the precise moment President Buhari arrives in India to attend the India-Africa Summit and meet with high level Indian officials. President Buhari is expected to meet with members of the Nigerian diaspora Wednesday afternoon at the embassy, according to his spokesman Garba Shehu.

During a similar protest in Japan, a Nigerian embassy official address protesters with a microphone saying, “the government of Nigeria is ready and willing to listen to your grievances. I will pass your message and I assure you that I will pass it to the Nigerian government.”
