Justice A.T. Badamasi of the High Court in Kano today restrained the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, from demolishing or tampering with any structure in or around the Emir’s palace pending the hearing of a substantive motion.
The court order also restrained the Emir and the Emirate Council from giving quit notices or evicting any person residing within the palace, known as Gidan Rumfa, until the determination of the substantive application.
Justice Badamasi also directed all the parties involved in the case, both plaintiffs and respondents, to maintain the status quo pending the court’s final determination of the substantive suit.
Speaking to reporters, the lawyer to the plaintiff, Sanusi Sadiq, alleged that the Emir and the Emirate Council were seeking to destroy the graveyard where 13 former emirs of Kano were buried. He added that the plan to demolish the structures within the palace was capable of wrecking aspects of the ancient tradition the Kano Emirate Council was known for.
Justice Badamasi adjourned hearing of the substantive case till November 12.
