Worshippers at a local church found the body, according to one of the churchgoers who spoke to a SaharaReporters correspondent.

Several worshippers provided gory details about body, which was apparently lying in a pool of blood.

After finding the body, the churchgoers immediately went to the the local police station and reported the discovery to the officers on duty.

The police officers immediately detained the worshippers and dispatched a team of investigators to examine the headless corpse.

"Those that went to report the incident at the station were detained by the police. They claimed that their arrest was part of their investigation to ascertain how the corpse got to the site," the source said.

The police also began arresting several landlords and residents in the neighborhood allegedly in an effort to “comb the scene”.

"The policemen left the community where the incident happened and went to the nearby communities to make indiscriminate arrests of several people", a landlord said.

Many residents told our correspondent that the body could be the result of a ritual killing.

A palm wine tapper, who refused to reveal his name due to fear of police arrest, explained that the deceased must have been killed somewhere far from the area and the killer dumped his headless body at the base of the mountain in the area.

SaharaReporters learned that the mass arrests conducted by the police caused several people to flee the neighborhood.

Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ondo State Police Command, Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters and noted that the investigation was close to revealing the identity of the victim.

PRO Joseph denied knowledge of of the allegations of the mass arrests of complaints and residents who came to report the said incident at the station.

"We did not arrest anyone neither did we detain anybody. We received information about the incident and sent our men there to evacuate the body.

"We were just inviting some of the residents and asking them questions of what they might know about the ugly incident,” PRO Joseph said.

‎He added that the headless body of the yet to be identified man has been deposited at the morgue of the State General Hospital in Akure.
