Explosion Rocks Bayelsa Speaker Country Home Before Election

The Bayelsa State Police Command confirmed a bomb attack at the country home of State Assembly's Speaker, Kombowei Benson, by unknown assailants less than 48 hours to the supplementary election in Southern Ijaw Local Council.

Police spokesman, Asnim Butswat, told a SaharaReporters correspondent that "on January 7th, at about 0405hrs, unknown persons detonated an object suspected to be dynamite in the compound of Honorable Kombowei Benson, at Korokorosei Community. The impact resulted in damage to the doors, windows, and glass at his residence. Nobody was injured and no life was lost."

"The scene was visited by a team dispatched and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit is conducting post-blast investigations. Efforts have been intensified to arrest the culprits,” he added.

Also on Thursday gunmen attacked Beinmopre Jonah, the young brother to the Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, who narrowly escaped death. Members of the State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have claimed that "thugs suspected to be working for the leading opposition Party, the All Progressives Congress, invaded his residence in Ekeki, Yenagoa Local Government Area of the State, leaving him unconscious.”
