On Tuesday, multiple blasts destroyed four buildings on Zomi Zomi street and left two people injured.

The explosion was caused by a tenant of one of the buildings, Elue Chinedu, setting fire to a pile of rubbish within his compound.

The Commander of the 4 Brigade Command, Benin, Brigadier General Farouk Yahaya, confirmed all of these details to journalists on Wednesday shortly after conducting an on-site investigation.

“By my assessment and by that of others, it is obvious that it [the explosion] was not a terrorist attack,” Brigadier General Yahaya stated.

The Army official went on to note that soldiers had discovered material for the manufacture of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in a previous raid.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) Osifo Abiodun noted that Mr. Chinedu was taken in for questioning to ascertain how the IED materials came to be in the building.

PRO Abiodun assured the citizenry that they should go about their daily activities as the area had been “cleaned up”.
