Mr. Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, Executive Chairman, Lagos Internal Revenue Service (LIRS), evaded questions regarding the agency’s relationship with Alpha Beta at a conference on tax reforms held yesterday. Alpha Beta is a consultancy owned by the former governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu.
A SaharaReporters correspondent present at the conference asked Mr. Ogunsanwo if Alpha Beta is still one of the State’s tax consultants and if they are collecting revenue for the state.
“They're tax consultants for the state, but they are not collecting taxes. They only provide data and the state will not abdicate its responsibility to any tax consultant,” Mr. Ogunsanwo said.
However, Mr. Ogunsanwo did not explain what kind of data these consultants provide and how much they are being paid.
“We continue to engage with consultants,” he said. “There is nothing like anybody collecting revenue on behalf of the government.”
Mr. Ogunsanwo announced at the conference that the LIRS is overhauling its informal sector operations to facilitate voluntary compliance by taxpayers. The reforms will make it easier for market workers, artisans, small- and medium-sized enterprises, and domestic workers to file their taxes.
