Tragedy Averted As Conoil Tanker Carrying Petrol Tumbles In Akure, Ondo State

A SaharaReporters correspondent reported that the incident could have caused a tragedy in the city but it was averted by the combined efforts of security agencies and locals in the State capital.

A tanker carrying 33,000 liters of petrol fell and tumbled on the busy Isikan Road in Akure, Ondo State, on Wednesday.

The Conoil tanker hit the middle of a roundabout while the driver tried to turn the vehicle.

Eyewitnesses told our correspondent that the driver of the petrol tanker immediately fled the scene of the incident.

While no life was lost, commercial activities were paralyzed on the busy street for several hours as sympathizers gathered in the hundreds to help scoop the fuel spilling inside the gutter near the road.

Officials from the Ondo State Fire Service were at the scene with policemen from the State Command to keep the area safe.

A Fire Service officer told SaharaReporters that the timely intervention of the firefighters helped prevent the situation from escalating into tragedy.

The State Police Spokesman, Femi Joseph, told our correspondent on the phone that the situation had been brought under control and noted that security personnel from the State Command rushed to the scene to avert tragedy immediately after receiving a call about the incident.
