Nasarawa State Legislators Brawl Over Governor’s Appointments, Six Members Suspended

During the swearing in ceremony, the House leader moved to suspend six lawmakers who opposed the governor’s appointments, resulting in a brawl.

The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has suspended six of its members for fighting during an inauguration ceremony at the Conference Hall of the Government House on Monday, April 4.

After the two-year tenure of eleven local government chairmen ended on March 24, 2016, Governor Tanko Al-Makura appointed eleven sole administrators to replace them until new elections take place. 

During the swearing in ceremony, the House leader moved to suspend six lawmakers who opposed the governor’s appointments, resulting in a brawl.

Furniture was damaged and punches were thrown during the scuffle, which was captured on film by ChannelsTV.

The six legislators who opposed the governor’s appointments were suspended on Tuesday. The Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, Godiya Akwashiki, announced the suspension.

“Thirteen lawmakers and me have voted in support of a motion moved for the suspension of the six lawmakers who misbehaved during our sitting on Monday. They are Kassim Mohammed-Kassim (APC-Akwanga South), Murtala Sodangi(APC-Nasarawa Central), Mohammed Okpoku (APC-Udege/ Loko, Musa Ali(APC-Keffi East), Makpa Malla (APC-Wamba) and Abubakar Kana (APC-Kokona West).”

According to the Deputy Speaker, the above lawmakers will be suspended from the House without pay.
