Four FUTA Students Die In A ‘Horrible’ Motor Crash In Ondo

Four students of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) in Ondo state traveling to an event outside the state on Saturday lost their lives in “horrible” automobile accident, SaharaReporters can confirmed.

The students were traveling in a campus bus belonging to the Redeemed Christian Fellowship [RCF] when the ghastly accident occurred at the Ibule/Igbara Oke junction at a suburb of Akure town, in Ifedore Local Government of Ondo state.

SaharaReporters correspondent gathered from several students’ sources that some of the deceased who are final year students of the institution were traveling to Lagos state for a wedding reception.

A student of the institution, Ayobami Adegbenro, who confirmed the news in a statement to SaharaReporters and said that some of the deceased were in their final years-400/500 levels.

“The students were traveling for a program in a campus bus belonging to the Redeemed Christian Fellowship [RCF] when a motorcyclist veered through the driver’s front wheel.

“And in attempt to avoid crushing the cyclist, the driver immediately smashed on the breaks and the vehicle somersaulted several times, flinging the students outside the bus. I counted four dead bodies” he said.

Another student who confirmed the sad news during a telephone call said the officers of the Nigeria Police Force and Federal Road Safety Corp have rushed to the scene of the accident.

“The officers have arrived the scene of the accident, and today our Vice Chancellor is giving the hand of his daughter in marriage in Lagos but I don’t know if that is where they are heading to,” the student said.

Femi Joseph, the Spokesman of the Nigeria Police Force [NPF] in the Ondo State Police Command, also confirmed the sad news to SaharaReporters in a telephone interview and noted that men of the command have already visited the scene of the accident.

“Our officers have rushed to the scene of the accident and confirmed to me that the incident occurred between a campus bus and a commercial motorcyclist in the local community.

“Part of the information I got from the scene revealed that the bus used by students in transiting somersaulted at intervals after the driver tried to maneuver his way in order not to hit the motorcyclist along on the road.

“Our officers have also confirmed that four dead bodies who are students of FUTA were counted on the scene while the evacuation continues but we would make our investigation known very soon”, he said.

Another close source to the Student Union Government (SUG) told SaharaReporters disclosed that those other injured have been rushed to nearby hospital for immediate treatment.

“I don’t know the total number of people inside the bus but I can confirm to you that four people were counted dead by the Police and officers of the Federal Road Safety Corp  [FRSC] who came for rescue mission.

“The students were traveling in a campus bus bearing the Redeem Christian Fellowship [RCF] although we are still trying to get their full names and main department or faculty”, he said. 

An officer with the FRSC who identified himself as Mr. Joel told SaharaReporters that they have began the evacuation of the dead students.

"They would be deposited at the hospital's morgue", he said.
