The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) – Ondo State Command on Sunday said two out of the three nuns abducted by kidnappers have been rescued and freed by its officers.
Hilda Ibifuro-Harrison, Commissioner for Police in the State who confirmed this to journalists at her office in Akure, said the victims were rescued by the combined effort of the officers of the command and that of the intelligence squad sent from Abuja.
Ms. Ibifuro-Harrison said the police were able to rescue the remaining two victims following information received from the members of the public in the area. However, she did not comment on the third nun who was kidnapped one week after the first incident.
The two Catholic Reverend Sisters, Apo Perpetual and Roseline Familade, including their driver identified as Zwugwa Zibai, were seized last week at the Kajola area of the Lagos-Ore-Benin expressway while the third victim was abducted in the same area a week later.
The State Police boss who hurriedly addressed journalists refused to give further details about the rescue mission of the freed nuns while noting that efforts were underway to free the third victim.
A SaharaReporters correspondent gathered that the trio was on a journey to Ijebu Itele in Ogun State for an annual program when they fell victim to the kidnapping ring on a separate journey.
A resident in the Kajola community confirmed to our correspondent that the victims were dumped by a nearby bush following a close mark between the kidnappers and the police.
Also, Femi Joseph, Spokesman of the Ondo State Police Command, told SaharaReporters that the rescued nuns were hale and hearty with their driver as the police were already on the trail of the suspects.
Mr. Joseph also denied that family members of the victims paid ransom before they were freed by the police at the kidnappers’ den, noting that command had been enjoying robust relationship with members of the public through timely information.
