Police Commissioner: We Will Cast Away Corrupt Police Officers

“Let us be an exemplary; a good face of what a policeman should be in a democracy."

The Police Force of Nigeria decorated 10,042 of its members in Lagos State on Wednesday at the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) Hall in Ikeja Government Reseved Area (GRA), Lagos State. The decoration was done by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni. Two thousand and seventy-five officers were promoted from Sergeant to Inspector, 7407 were promoted from Corporal to Sergeant, while 560 were promoted from Constable to Corporal.

The Commissioner advised the newly promoted officers to be true to the tenants of the police force through their behavior and interactions with the citizens. He encouraged them to familiarize themselves with the codes of conduct of the police officers as stipulated in their handbook.

“Let us be an exemplary; a good face of what a policeman should be in a democracy. A good face of what a policeman should be internationally. Let us carry out our work in due observance of the rule of law,” Mr. Owoseni said.

He reminded them that they are to serve the people because without the taxpaying members of society, the police force would not exist.

“Let us respect the rights of the citizens. Let us carry out our work with due observance of the rule of law. Let us shun illegality. Let us shun and run away from all acts of extortion. Let us stop custodian violence. Let us be careful and pay cognizance to our appearance.”

The Commissioner encouraged the officers to change their old ways, as that is the only way they can regain the respect and confidence of the public. He warned that any police officer caught misbehaving would be expelled from the police force.

“Any of you that misbehave don’t belong to us. Anything that you do that is a misconduct, bribery, extortion and breach of the rights of the citizens, we will cast you away easily,” he said.

Mr. Owoseni also encouraged the officers to be more receptive and friendly with the press. He informed them that journalists are friends of the police.
