Lawmakers from the All Progressives Congress (APC) reconfirmed their support for President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration following reports that Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Deputy Senate Minority Leader Emmanuel Bawcha rescinded his support. Mr. Bawcha led a troupe of PDP Senators who collectively stated that they no longer support Mr. Buhari.
According to the Punch, a group of APC and Labour Party Senators, led by Olusola Adeyeye, urged their Senate colleagues in the opposition to continue supporting Mr. Buhari in his fight against corruption.
These latest developments follow growing concern nationwide that the anti-corruption drive is selectively targeting opponents to Mr. Buhari and the APC.
Mr. Adeyeye said “we do not see the investigation as partisan at all. We don’t see it as an effort to intimidate members of a particular political party because the diversion of public funds meant for fighting insurgency. There is nothing dictatorial or against the rule of law in all of the actions, programs and policies of the President Muhammadu Buhari’s government because nobody has been unjustly arrested, imprisoned on mere allegations. Everybody has had the chance to freely defend himself or herself.”
Mr. Bawcha was angered by “the plot to remove the Senate president and his deputy through illegal means” and demanded that Mr. Buhari “act with caution and desist from acts of lawlessness.”
