SaharaReporters has learned that the Nigerian blogger Abubakar Sidiq Usman has been released from Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) custody today.
This announcement follows intense pushback from online media sources and social media against the EFCC for arresting Mr. Usman. The EFCC said that Mr. Usman was “cyber stalking” the EFCC Chairman Ibrahim Magu.
Mr. Usman was reportedly writing stories and posts about Mr. Magu which was not flattering towards him, however it is not clear what crimes he allegedly committed.
Human rights advocates intensely criticized the EFCC for abusing freedom of speech and human rights of Mr. Usman.
