Budget Padding Scandal: NANS Zone A Dissociates Self From Vote Of Confidence On Dogara

In a statement signed by Umar Faruk Musa, NANS Zone A Treasurer, the students’ body said it was not consulted by the coordinator before the announcement of a vote of confidence was made.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Zone A (Northwest) has distanced itself from the vote of confidence passed on Mr. Yakubu Dogara, Speaker of the House of Representatives, by its Zonal Coordinator.

In a statement signed by Umar Faruk Musa, NANS Zone A Treasurer, the students’ body said it was not consulted by the coordinator before the announcement of a vote of confidence was made. According to Mr. Musa, the matter was not discussed at all by the zonal executive council of NANS. He explained that the vote of confidence passed was nothing more than a view of the coordinator and not that of NANS.

“We were not consulted at all. We never knew about it. The pronouncement came from the personal experience of the Zone A Coordinator and if there should be any vote of confidence, a memo has to be created whereby input will be collected from all members of the executive,” Mr. Musa stated.

He added that the opposition to the vote of confidence is based on the failure of the Zonal Coordinator to bring the matter up for discussion.

“I think I should be consulted, likewise other members of the executive, before such matter would spring up.

“I, the Treasurer of Zone A and other members of the executive, dissociate ourselves from this act and call on the Federal Government, agencies and concerned individuals to allow justice to prevail.

“We equally urge Speaker Dogara to honor the rule of law for the sustainability of the country’s democracy,” Mr. Musa said.

In a statement issued on Monday, the coordinator had described Mr. Dogara, who is under fire for his involvement in the budget padding malfeasance, as an exemplary figure in the fight against corruption. The statement branded Mr. Dogara’s critics as “mischievous” and brands the Speaker as a “worthy” and “roundly groomed” leader.
