President Muhammadu Buhari presided over his second Council of State meeting today since being the democratically elected leader of Nigeria. Several former heads of state were in attendance, including former military ruler Abdulsalami Abubakar and Ernest Shonekan, but it was former President Goodluck Jonathan who captured the attention of the media according to reports.
This is the first Council of State meeting Mr. Jonathan has attended since his 2015 electoral defeat, having not attended the last meeting in October.
Several governors were also in attendance at today’s meeting including Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, Rivers State Governor Nyesome Wike, and Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, among others.
The Council is expected to deliberate over several appointments including that of the Acting Inspector General of the Police Ibrahim Idris and key positions at the Independent National Election Commission (INEC).
