Actress and humanitarian activist Angelina Jolie has filed a divorce from her husband, actor Brad Pitt.
Ms. Jolie’s lawyer, Robert Offer, confirmed the development, saying that her “decision was made for the health of the family.”
The couple married in 2014 but had been together since 2004 after meeting on the set of the film Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Mr. Pitt divorced his then wife, Jennifer Aniston, in 2005.
Ms. Jolie was previously married to actors Billy Bob Thornton and Jonny Lee Miller.
According to the BBC, Ms. Jolie is asking for physical custody of the couple’s six children, Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox, and Vivienne. Zahara was adopted from an orphanage in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Ms. Jolie has used her celebrity to fight for humanitarian cause. She served as a Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations Refugee Agency for 11 years before being appointed Special Envoy in April 2012.
She underwent a preventative double mastectomy in 2013.
Ms. Jolie and Mr. Pitt are one of Hollywood’s most famous couples. The two recently collaborated on the 2015 film By The Sea.
