‘You Are Ignorant Of Tradition By Asking Emir Of Kano To Abdicate His Throne,' Senator Danpass Tells Senator Owie

September 28, 2016

The former Senate Chief Whip had asked the Emir to vacate his throne and join partisan politics because of his frequent comments on national issues.

Senator Muhammadu Gambo Danpass, a Kano indigene and member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has branded former Senate Chief Whip Rowland Owie as ignorant of the roles of traditional rulers and accused him of wanting to silence the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, for asking him to vacate his throne.

The former Senate Chief Whip had asked the Emir to vacate his throne and join partisan politics because of his frequent comments on national issues.

Reacting to Mr. Owie's statement, Mr. Danpass told newsmen in Kano State on Wednesday that the former senator is ignorant of the inherited roles of traditional rulers.

Mr. Danpass, who is also the caretaker Chairman of the Kano Textile Market, said the actual role of traditional rulers is to correct wrongs in the society, irrespective of who is responsible for the wrong. He explained that keeping silent in the face of national socio-economic difficulties would amount to a betrayal of people’s trust by the traditional ruler as well as his divinely-given fatherly role.

The senator further reminded Mr. Owie that the Emir of Dutse, who he wants the Kano ruler to emulate, is also an outspoken monarch where national issues are concerned. He argued that the Emir of Kano is not the only traditional ruler who speaks on national issues.

"Senator Rowland Owie should know that the Sultan of Sokoto and even the Ooni of Ife speak on national issues, and these are facts about the situation in the country. So it is not only Emir Muhammadu Sunusi who is talking," he said.

Speaking about preparations for the Kano Textile Market elections, Mr. Danpass said many people have shown interest in the various positions available.

He accused the ousted Chairman, Liti Kulkul, of continuous collection of money from traders despite a court injunction restraining him from doing so.

"Liti Kulkul is the one behind the protests against the government of Governor Umar Ganduje, which is planning to build roads in the market," he alleged, adding that the Ganduje government deserves commendations for its effort to modernize the market.
