INEC To Sensitize Voters To Participate In Ondo Elections, Avoid Violent Behavior

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has attributed violence as the major cause of "inconclusive elections" in the country.

Segun Agbaje, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Ondo State, said this in Akure and also noted that the action by unscrupulous politicians during election period causes harm to the commission during election polls.

Mr. Agbaje spoke at a stakeholders meeting on the implementation of the Voters Education activities for the 2016 Ondo State Governorship election.

"There is no need for violence in this forthcoming elections because inconclusive elections emanate from violence," he said.

He disclosed that the unwillingness of electorates to come out and exercise their rights on election day has entrenched issues relating to "voter apathy" across the country.

SaharaReporters correspondent reported that REC tasked stakeholders in the electoral process of the state to ensure a proper sensitization of electorates on the need to reduce void votes in the November governorship poll.

"All stakeholders must play their roles in ensuring that the numbers of voided votes are drastically reduced during the election in the state.

"We don't want to experience what happened in Edo State with regard to the high number of voided votes, that is why an aggressive sensitization is needed".

Mr. Agbaje said that INEC is collaborating with all security agencies in the State to ensure elections are conducted in a peaceful atmosphere.

He maintained that the electoral body was prepared to strengthen its synergy with heads of security agencies to ensure the polling areas are secure from violence.

Olusola Osaze, the Commission's Director of Publicity and Voters Education from Abuja, said proper awareness that would guide electorates in the State ahead of the November election has begun.

Mr. Osaze urged the people of Ondo State to participate in the forthcoming election stating that its part of their right in the democratic shaping of the country.

Nick Dazang, the Deputy Director of INEC on Voters Education, further championed the need for effective mobilization of electorates through civil education.

Mr. Dazang disclosed that the November 26th 2016 governorship election in the state would be more transparent than the just concluded Edo State governorship poll.

No fewer than twenty-eight political parties would be participating in the November governorship poll of Ondo State as given by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

SaharaReporters correspondent in Akure had reported that a total of 1,201,073 Permanent Voters Cards (PVC) has been dispatched to electorates in the State.
