October 19, 2016

A source close to the terminal operator told our correspondent on Wednesday that the paramilitary man was stopped from boarding a Dana Air aircraft from Lagos to Abuja by the airline’s security personnel, who discovered his firearms and ammunition at the boarding gate area of the terminal.

A paramilitary man was on Wednesday afternoon stopped from boarding a flight with firearms at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Two (MMA2) in Lagos.

A source close to the terminal operator told our correspondent on Wednesday that the paramilitary man was stopped from boarding a Dana Air aircraft from Lagos to Abuja by the airline’s security personnel, who discovered his firearms and ammunition at the boarding gate area of the terminal.

The spokesman of Dana Air, Mr. Kingsley Ezenwa, confirmed the development but said that the paramilitary man was ignorant of the aviation rules and standard procedures.

Mr. Ezenwa explained that the man was later directed to follow the due procedures, which he later complied with, but he was not allowed to board the flight to Abuja that he had originally booked.

“It’s a normal procedure. Whenever the personnel of the Department of State Security (DSS) and paramilitary wants to travel, some know the procedures while others don’t. The procedure is for you to register your firearms with the Aviation Security (AVSEC) of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). AVSEC will then confirm if the owner of the firearms is actually traveling with the airline,” he explained.

“He was stopped at the boarding gate when the firearm was discovered. He later went through the whole process and before he could finish, the aircraft had departed for Abuja, but he later went on the next flight to Abuja. He was never delayed by us because we discovered that he was ignorant of the standard procedures," Mr. Ezenwa added.
