Fraud In Meteorological Agency As Acting Director Claims Two Birth Places

November 1, 2016

The document also revealed that Mrs. Agbontaen, who graduated from the University of Benin in October 1986, never indicated her participation in the compulsory one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme, but later fraudulently attached to her documents her participation in the NYSC program in 1995, nine years after graduating.

SaharaReporters has revealed that yet another crisis is brewing in one of Nigeria’s aviation agencies, as the Acting Director of Administration of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), Ijeoma Agbontaen, has laid claim to two birthplaces in her records, among other fraudulent claims.

A document exclusively obtained by SaharaReporters on Tuesday indicated that Mrs. Agbontaen, who was employed as the Deputy General Manager of Human Resources, Grade Level 16, on August 17t, 2015, initially claimed to have been born in Enugu State on her letter of application for employment (‘Form Gen 69B’) and her certificate of age declaration.

However, on her Certificate of State of Origin completed on August 27, 2015, Mrs. Agbontaen claimed to be born in Benin City, Edo State.

“Mrs. Ijeoma Agbontaen’s CV never recorded any evidence of having participated in the NYSC even when she secured an NYSC certificate in 1995, nine years after her first degree in 1986. It is unusual to have taken part in the NYSC nine years after graduation,” according to the document.

In her letter of application for employment, Mrs. Agbontaen also claimed that she never had any previous employment under any government agency, however, her CV indicated that she worked for the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) between 2002 and 2007 in various capacities.

A petition written against Mrs. Agbontaen by the Administrative Officer of the NIMET, Shehu Abdullahi, and sent to one of the leading unions in the industry, revealed that Mrs. Agbontaen also fraudulently backdated her letter of acceptance of the job from August 17, 2015 to January 25, 2015.

The petition revealed that Mrs. Agbontaen is under qualified for her current position explaining, “Agbontaen, who has not been able to provide evidence of her work experience, is still on probation and is not qualified to hold the position of the Deputy General Manager, Human Resources GL16, and is presently the Acting Director, Administration, even when there are two very senior General Managers GL17 in the department. She calls for meetings that the GM’s are expected to be in attendance in her office.”

The petition further accused Mrs. Agbontaen of being over 50 years old, having been born on January 5, 1965, and should have been given a contract appointment rather than a permanent employment as the DGM of Human Resources.
