Police Foil Kidnap Gang, Arrest One

The kidnappers were intercepted after a heavy gun battle along Azikiwe Road, Port Harcourt, while police were going for an operation. 



The Inspector-General of the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), on Tuesday, intercepted a four-man abduction gang operating in Rivers and Bayelsa states. The kidnappers were intercepted after a heavy gun battle along Azikiwe Road, Port Harcourt, while police were going for an operation. 


This was disclosed in a statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer, Deputy Commissioner of Police Don N. Awunah. 
 The statement explained that the kidnappers were heavily armed and their interception was facilitated by receipt of credible intelligence and public support. One of the kidnappers, James Peter, 30, an indigene of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, was arrested. The three other gang members, the Police stated, were fatally wounded. 

The arrested gang member, the Police further revealed, has been providing very valuable information on the membership of the gang and their method of operation.
 
 Weapons recovered from the kidnappers include one General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), one AK-47 rifle, chains of GPMG ammunition and two fully loaded AK-47 magazines.

The Police also disclosed that they are making efforts to arrest fleeing members of the gang and recover their cache of arms.
