Police Arrest Leader Of Gang That Kidnapped CBN Governor's Wife

The Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) has arrested the tenth member of the gang responsible for the September kidnap of Mrs. Margaret Emefiele, wife of Mr. Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

This was disclosed in a press statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Don N. Awunah. According to the statement, Umar Abubakar AKA Kiriwa was arrested in Minna, Niger State, on 9 December, following weeks of monitoring and intelligence gathering with the support of members of the community.

Abubakar, described as one of the arrowheads of the gang, led detectives to two  houses and three plots of land he purchased with his share of the ransom obtained from the crime. He also confessed to spending part of the ransom on setting up a store in Minna.

"The arrested kingpin confessed that he used N3million, part of the ransom, to open a provision shop in Minna, which he was running with his wife. The original papers of the houses and plots of land have been recovered and registered as exhibits and the shop also sealed," the statement disclosed.

The statement added that the Police, with the assistance and the support of members of the public, will ensure that crimes committed are detected, while perpetrators are apprehended and prosecuted.
