He specifically accused APC chieftains Segun Oni and Kayode Fayemi, both former governors of Ekiti State, of orchestrating the conspiracy while attending a meeting held in Ado-Ekiti.
Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of plotting to remove him from office.
Mr. Fayose disclosed this during a press conference in Lagos on Wednesday.
According to Mr. Fayose, a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the APC is planning such a plot due to his refusal to defect to the ruling party. He specifically accused APC chieftains Segun Oni and Kayode Fayemi, both former governors of Ekiti State, of orchestrating the conspiracy while attending a meeting held in Ado-Ekiti.
“At a recent meeting attending by APC stalwarts in Ado-Ekiti, two former governors of the state and members of the party, Segun Oni and Dr. Kayode Fayemi, bragged that there is no going back on the latest plan to subvert the will of the people of Ekiti before the expiration of my tenure in October 2018 through a planned dubious process,” Mr. Fayose stated in his letter to Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen.
“The fresh plot by the APC is aimed at compromising a section of the judiciary and muzzling democracy in their desperation to oust me,” he added. The governor therefore called on Mr. Onnoghen to prevent the judiciary from being used to execute the alleged plot.
The APC in Ekiti State subsequently issued a response to Mr. Fayose, dismissing his claim as “the ranting of a notorious blackmailer, electoral robber, political harlot and a pathological liar.”
Ekiti State APC spokesperson Taiwo Olatunbosun wrote the rebuttal, stating, “Fayemi and Oni are too decent and busy in their assignments to engage in such frivolous boasts that Fayose is accusing them of. Their track records as democrats and omoluabi are there for all to see, as opposed to Fayose’s hit-and-run bolekaja reputation.”
Mr. Oni took exception to the governor’s statement, calling it “an embarrassment.”
“Fayose should stop embarrassing that office. He should speak the truth and bring out facts. I don’t know what he wanted to achieve with this allegation, but I am very embarrassed. I hope he will be courageous enough to apologize if he found out that the allegation is not true,” Mr. Oni said in a telephone chat with The Guardian.
On his part, Mr. Fayemi said, “This allegation is not only irresponsible, it is quite unfair to two former governors of the state.”
He urged Mr. Fayose to focus on serving the people of Ekiti State as he had promised to do, saying he should prioritize paying workers their salaries and keeping the state safe.
