ONSU, an indigenous students' organization, condemned the unwarranted shooting of the UNIOSUN students, saying that it threatened the peace of Osogbo, the Osun State capital.
The Osogbo National Students' Union (ONSU) has urged the Nigeria Police Force to probe the two police officers who shot two Osun State University students over the weekend, Leaders NG reports.
ONSU, an indigenous students' organization, condemned the unwarranted shooting of the UNIOSUN students, saying that it threatened the peace of Osogbo, the Osun State capital. The group therefore called on the appropriate authorities to begin an investigation into the matter and to penalize the offending officers.
The union lamented that police officers who are tasked with protecting lives and promoting security were engaging in such violence.
"It is our belief that the police who claim to be friends of the people should always act their words," ONSU said in its press release. "It is not enough for them to act on information without thorough investigations."
"We acknowledge the effort of the state government of Osun and police top hierarchy in the state at dousing the tension which almost degenerated into chaos. Osogbo people are known for peace and security and security agents should assist in maintaining the peace.
"We appeal for calm on the part of the students of the university and we want to implore the police authorities to investigate the incident dispassionately to ensure that the culprits are brought to justice," the statement concluded.
