Three Ex-Police Officers Docked For Torturing Man To Death While On Duty

Mr. Bamisile alleged that the accused tortured one Oluwatobi Badmus while he was in their custody when they were still in the service of the Nigeria Police Force.

Three ex-police officers – Awodeyi Adesola, Adekunle Adedeji and Adepetu Olamilekan – were on Tuesday docked at an Akure High Court over alleged manslaughter.

The prosecutor, Wale Bamisile, told the court that the accused were arraigned following an allegation of torturing a suspect which led to his death.

Mr. Bamisile alleged that the accused tortured one Oluwatobi Badmus while he was in their custody when they were still in the service of the Nigeria Police Force.

He said that the victim was arrested for allegedly stealing a BlackBerry phone belonging to one Bisi Adejuyigbagbe.

The prosecutor said that the torture from the ex-police officers was presumed to have led to the untimely death of the victim shortly after his release from police custody on July 21, 2016.

According to him, the offence is contrary to Section 317 and Punishable under Section 325 of the Criminal Code Cap 37, Vol.1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the prosecution had called two out of 11 witnesses.

The prosecution counsel, however, moved an application for the adjournment of the case to enable him prepare and bring other witnesses to court.

The presiding judge, Justice O.O Akeredolu, granted the prosecution’s application and adjourned the case till February 27 for further hearing.
