Court Unfreezes Patience Jonathan’s $5.8m Account

The order to unfreeze Mrs. Jonathan’s account followed an application filed by Ifedayo Adedipe, who led a team of eight lawyers defending the former first lady.

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Thursday unfroze a Skye Bank account containing nearly $6m belonging to former First Lady Patience Jonathan.

The order to unfreeze Mrs. Jonathan’s account followed an application filed by Ifedayo Adedipe, who led a team of eight lawyers defending the former first lady.

Mr. Adedayo argued that Mrs. Jonathan was not a party in the suit which had led to the order to freeze her account, contending that the court lacked the jurisdiction to make an order against an individual who was not a party in the suit before it.

Justice Mojisola Olatoregun consequently ordered the unfreezing of Mrs. Jonathan’s account.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which in 2016 initiated the suit leading to the freezing of the account, did not file any response to the application filed to discharge the order.

The account holding $5,842,316.66 was frozen in November 2016 after EFCC investigator Abdullahi Tukur and EFCC prosecutor Rotimi Oyedepo argued that the funds were the proceeds of criminal activities.
