Ondo Police Commissioner Orders Investigation of Policeman’s Attack on Female Student

Following a SaharaReporters story, the police in Ondo State have launched a full-scale investigation into an attack on Adekunle Comfort Omoromoke, a female student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), who was allegedly attacked by a police officer, Yusuf Ibrahim.

Sources told SaharaReporters on Friday evening that Hilda Ibifuro-Harrison, the Commissioner of Police, set up an investigation team comprising of senior police officers to look into the incident.  The move followed a meeting with Miss Omoromoke’s lawyer at the Command’s headquarters in Akure, the state capital.

One of these sources, a police officer who requested anonymity, told our correspondent on the phone that the female police boss was not happy about the incident and had given the go ahead for a “thorough investigation” of the attack on the student.

“The Commissioner of Police has launched an investigation into the attack on the female student of the Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko who was molested by one of our officers attached to Owo Divisional Police Station after the story was read on the SaharaReporters online news medium,” the source said.

“Her lawyer who identified himself as Barrister Titiloye Charles was at the headquarters of the Police Command on Igbatoro road in Akure to lodge a formal complaint and he held a meeting with the Commissioner of police over the issue”, he added, following which the Commissioner order the probe.  The accused policeman, Mr. Yusuf was invited to give his own statement concerning the issue.[story_link align="left"]52401[/story_link]

The source said Mr. Yusuf might appear in court because of the evidence against him, and the fact that the commissioner doesn’t joke with any issue that relates to females in the society because she is also a mother.

Also speaking to our correspondent by phone, Mr. Charles confirmed his visit to the police headquarters and his meeting with Ms./Mrs. Ibifuro-Harrison over the issue.

“The Police Commissioner received my petition concerning the attack and we held a meeting with her at the headquarters where she was shown evidence of the attack mostly the blood stains on the student’s dress.

“The commercial driver that transported the lady was also with us to testify before the commissioner how the attack was carried out by the officer. So, we are pursuing the case to any length and our agitation is that the policeman must be prosecuted for what he has done to that lady,” he said.

Miss Omoromoke, a final year student of the biochemistry department of AAUA was allegedly assaulted and molested at an Ago-yeye security checkpoint on Owo/Akungba road by Corporal Ibrahim, who is attached to the ‘A’ Divisional Police Station in Owo area.

Corporal Ibrahim, with Police Force Number “364909”, was reportedly seeking a N50 bribe from a commercial driver transporting Miss Omoromoke back to her school when the attack occurred.

SaharaReporters learned that the final year female student was on her way to the Adekunle Ajasin University campus to submit her academic project, a prerequisite for graduating students when the policeman allegedly attacked and injured her.

Miss Omoromoke’s offense, according to her statement which was obtained by our correspondent, was that she derided the notorious policeman for demanding a bribe from the poor commercial driver.
