Major Abubakar Abdullahi, Coordinator of the Joint Media Campaign Centre of Operation Delta Safe (ODS), confirmed on Wednesday that the gun duel with sea pirates occurred during a deployment of troops at Creek 6 Houseboat in Cawthorne Channel while responding to a distress call of an attack around Ijawkiri.

“Unfortunately, two gallant soldiers exhibited the highest point of patriotism by paying the supreme price while three others sustained gunshot injuries,” Mr. Abdullahi said. “The effort is ongoing by the JTF to track and apprehend the criminals.‎"

Mr. Abdullahi added that in continuation of its drive to accomplish its mandate, ODS troops on patrol around Iyalama Adama axis of Rivers State discovered and destroyed 13 illegal refineries on Wednesday. However, no arrests were made.

The attack on the soldiers came barely 72 hours after an Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer was killed in the Kolo Creek area of Bayelsa State.

It was gathered that the security formations in Bayelsa, Delta, and Rivers States have been put on red alert following the recent attacks on security patrol teams.

‎Meanwhile, the Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Asuquo Amba, has met with the head of other sister security agencies in the state to brainstorm ways to create new synergy to prevent crime in the state.
