Man Behind Kaduna Senator's Recall Alleges Threats To Life

Mr. Mohammed Lawal Shehu, Convener of the Concerned Citizens of Northern Kaduna Senatorial District, has called on Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, to save him from supporters of  Suleiman Hunkuyi, the senator representing the district.

Mr. Shehu and members of his group recently initiated moves to have Mr. Hunkuyi recalled from the Senate. The group, made up of registered voters in the senatorial district, wrote to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) notifying it of their desire to recall Mr. Hunkuyi, who is alleged to have provided poor representation.

Their action, alleged Mr. Shehu, has earned him threats from Mr. Hunkuyi's supporters. He said he reported the threats to the Police, which did nothing about them, the reason he was forced to write Mr. El-Rufai.

In his letter dated April 11, 2017,   Mr. Shehu alleged that on 7 April, an unknown caller phoned him at about 9.59pm, saying he had been contracted to kill him.

"Your Excellency Sir, I am convinced that the caller is capable of carrying out his threats, perhaps with the help of state actors and non-state actors, which is why I have chosen to write to you directly, based on my perfect belief that His Excellency, as a fellow BOBA, fellow ABU alumnus, chief security officer of the state and father to all will promptly intervene by calling the attention of the senator," Mr. Shehu said in his letter to the governor.
