Unknown gunmen killed a police officer and stole his gun in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State on Sunday.

Our correspondent learned that an officer deployed to the Bayelsa State capital for a security patrol operation took a break at a local bar on Hospital Road when hoodlums hacked him to death before taking off with his AK-47 rifle.

The incident caused panic in the area, forcing many pubs to close down.

A source speaking anonymously explained that the gunmen, noticing his assault rifle, followed the officer into the bar.

“After drinking some bottles of beer, the policeman stood up and went to the backyard to urinate. He was holding his rifle. But the criminals also followed him to the backyard where they attacked and killed him. They fled with his gun,” the source said.

Contacted on the development, the spokesman of the Bayelsa State Police Command, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Asinim Butswat, ‎who confirmed the incident, stated that “On April 16, 2017, at about 01300 hours, a police patrol team, parked opposite the Skippers fast food, along DSP Alamieyeseigha Road, for surveillance operations, a Police Sergeant strayed away from the team, and was attacked by hoodlums who took away his firearm. We are following a promising lead. An investigation is ongoing.”
