Ogun State Shuts Down Hospital After Illegal Surgery Kills Patient

Kehinde, 24, reportedly died due to “illegal” surgery carried out on him.

Ogun State government on Thursday shut down a private hospital – Glorious Ona Ara Clinic and Maternity Home, Abeokuta, following alleged unethical practice leading to the death of a patient, Kehinde Sikiru.

Kehinde, 24, reportedly died due to “illegal” surgery carried out on him.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Health Information Officer, Taiyese Ebunlomo, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye, said the closure was carried out by the ministry’s monitoring team at Itori Odo in Abeokuta South local government area of the state.

“We have received so many calls, petitions and complaints from good people of the state on that particular hospital, performing illegal operations against the licence approved for the facility.

“And there has been a standing order that patience with complications or complicated issues be immediately referred to the nearest general hospital for better treatment,” he said.

The commissioner stated that Kehinde died as a result of the illegal operation carried out on him, adding that it was against the ethics of medical profession for Maternity Home, Mission Home and Traditional Birth Attendants to inject or preform operation on their patients as they are not licensed to do so.

At least 168 private health facilities have been sealed off in the state since the revalidation and registration exercise commenced in January 2016.
