A gunman open fired on several Republican members of Congress during a baseball practice in Virginia on Wednesday, wounding House of Representatives Majority Whip Steve Scalise and at least four others.

Republican lawmakers were holding a baseball practice for their upcoming game against Democrats this week when a man wielding a rifle opened fire from the side of the field.

Representative Mo Brooks of Alabama told reporters that Mr. Scalise was shot in his left hip and a congressional staffer was shot in the leg.

The Majority Whip was rushed to the hospital and is reportedly in stable condition, according to CNN.

Five people in total, including two Capitol Hill police officers, were taken to local hospitals after the attack.

The gunman was allegedly shot and wounded and will be placed in police custody after receiving medical attention.
