JUST IN: National Assembly Leadership Meets Tuesday To Consider Reconvening Before Sept 25

The Senate is scheduled to resume plenary on September 25, same day as the House of Representatives’ return to work. Meanwhile, with a request by President Muhammadu Buhari for the cerement of N228billion to fund the 2019 general election and other critical projects is still pending before both chambers, it is feared that a two-month legislative break could hamper the successful conduct of the election.

The leadership of the National Assembly will meet on Tuesday to consider the request of the Executive for the National Assembly to reconvene ahead of their scheduled dates, SaharaReporters understands.

The Senate is scheduled to resume plenary on September 25, same day as the House of Representatives’ return to work. 

Meanwhile, with a request by President Muhammadu Buhari for the cerement of N228billion to fund the 2019 general election and other critical projects is still pending before both chambers, it is feared that a two-month legislative break could hamper the successful conduct of the election.

Therefore, after tomorrow’s meeting, the National Assembly leadership will also meet with that of the Independent National Electoral Commission (JNEC).

In his letter to the legislature, the President had said the aggregate cost of the 2019 elections was estimated at N242,445,322,600.00

Of the amount, INEC was expected to receive N189.207 billion, the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) N4.2 billion, the Department of State Services (DSS) N12.213 billion and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) N3.573 billion.

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) was to get N30.541 billion and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) N2.628 billion.
