Dickson's Aides Escape Death As Armed Thugs Disrupt PDP Meeting In Bayelsa

According to some PDP members that attended the meeting, the targets of the thugs were Dr. Godswill Ziriki and Hon. Adolphus Ofongo, who are the Special Adviser on Tertiary Education and the Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, respectively.

Two aides of Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State, Honourable Godswill Ziriki and Honurable Adolphus Ofongo, on Wednesday, escaped death following the disruption of a meeting of stakeholders, organised by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for House of Assembly aspirants, in Southern Ijaw Local Government Council Area of the state.

The meeting, which was convened by the Acting Chairman of the Southern Ijaw Local Government Council, Honourable Nigeria Kia, and held at Latik Hotel along INEC road, lasted for over an hour before thugs, alleged to be loyal to the State Assembly Member representing Constituency 3, Honourable Daniel Igali, disrupted the gathering by throwing chairs and threatening to kill some persons.

According to some PDP members that attended the meeting, the targets of the thugs were Dr. Godswill Ziriki and Hon. Adolphus Ofongo, who are the Special Adviser on Tertiary Education and the Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, respectively.

The meeting was convened to interact with more than 14 State Assembly aspirants for the seat of Constituency 3, and it was alleged that the criticism by some aspirants against the planned return of Hon. David Igali led to the violence.

According to reports, Ziriki questioned Igali’s decision to seek another term in the State House of Assembly.

It was gathered that many of those who attended the meeting gathered and provided protection for Ziriki and Ofongo to avoid being beaten by the thugs, who were armed, just as sources at the meeting said the stakeholders are angry at the conduct of the accused Assembly member.

An aide to David Igali, who preferred not to be named, denied the allegation levelled against his boss, stating that "it is not true that the Assembly member sponsored the disruption. He has delivered on the mandate and the people of his Constituency want him to come back."
