A groundnut seller, who identified herself as Helen, has narrated how she escaped death by a whisker, when a three-storeyed shopping plaza collapsed in Abuja on Friday.

One person lost his life in the incident.

According to Helen, she was in the building to sell groundnuts to a customer few seconds before the building gave way. One of the engineers at the building then asked her to call a woman, who was selling fura nunu, a local drink, for him across the road.

“I left the building to run the errand for the man, and as I was coming back to carry my groundnuts, the building collapsed,” she narrated.

Helen stated that the man who sent her on the errand was among those still trapped in the rubble.

Helen was unable to speak for hours after she witnessed the incident, as she was in shock. It took her three hours before she managed to recount her experience.
