An employee of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Mr Anthony Muko, has been arrested with stolen items at the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos.

Muko, who until his arrest was a driver with NAMA, was accused of stealing the cargo from the Customs warehouse at the airport. He confessed to getting information on how to access the warehousefrom the airport security.

While parading the suspect, Jayne Shoboiki, the Customs Area Comptroller (CAC), MMA Command, alleged that Muko, who was engaged in NAMA in 2012, was arrested with a fully loaded stolen cargo, which was smuggled from its warehouse last Thursday.

The suspect confessed to the crime, saying it was the third time he would carry out the act from the warehouse.

Shoboiki said it was shocking to discover that a vehicle belonging to a government agency could be used to smuggle stolen cargo from the Customs warehouse at the airport, adding that the suspect was caught while driving the NAMA bus out of the warehouse.

She explained that all the seats of the bus were completely removed by the suspect in order to be able to fully steal the goods. She said as of the time the cargo was stolen, there was no declaration made of the stolen items and no duty was paid yet to the command.

She added: “You can see the large quantity of items stolen from our warehouse at tarmac. No declaration has been made on these items and no duty paid to government.”

In his confessional statement, Muko alleged that five men with Sheriff Security at the Lagos airport, gave him information on how to gain access to Customs warehouse at the tarmac in the early hours of the day.
