EXCLUSIVE: Alabi, Ex-Ondo PDP Chairman Who Left Because Of Mimiko, Set To Return

Alabi resigned his position as the Ondo Chairman of the PDP on December 5, 2014, after he was pressured by former President Goodluck Jonathan to hand over the reins of the party in the state to former Governor Olusegun Mimiko, who had defected from Labour Party and took thousands of his supporters into the existing PDP structure.

Barring last-minute changes, Ebenezer Alabi, a former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State, is set to return to the party, SaharaReporters has learnt.

As a way of compensation for his resignation, Mimiko had appointed Alabi as a Senior Special Assistant (SSA) in his cabinet, but he rejected the offer, sparking a long political feud between the duo.

A very strong supporter of Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff, the ousted National Chairman of the PDP, Alabi had left with some other aggrieved members of the PDP for the Mega Progressives Peoples Party (MPPP), which was later renamed Mega Party of Nigeria (MPN).

His exit from PDP came shortly after the outcome of the Supreme Court judgment confirming and recognising the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led group as the authentic faction of the party.

Indications emerged on Thursday that the ex-Ondo PDP Chairman had met with some of his political associates, friends and well-wishers, on his move to dump the Mega Party of Nigeria (MPN) and return to the PDP.

Competent sources close to Alabi told our correspondent that he had finalised his arrangement to return to the umbrella party in the state with hundreds of his supporters from the grassroots.

One of the sources, who preferred not to be named, said Alabi had held several meetings with PDP leaders in the state over his plans.

“Mr. Alabi has held lots of meetings with the leaders of the PDP in the state and they have agreed to welcome him back home because he has always been one of them, and a grassroots politician for that matter," said the source.

“So, he is already tired of the happenings in the Mega Party of Nigeria (MPN) and has concluded the plans to return to his old party, the PDP, in the state with many of his supporters championing the go ahead.”

SaharaReporters contacted Alabi on the phone and he also confirmed the report, saying he was returning to the PDP after pressure from his supporters to dump the MPN.

“It is very correct," he said.

"I have met with the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) even in the state and I am on my way back to the party. So, I am even waiting for them [leaders of the party] now to agree on a date and make it official."
