Shehu Sani: Those Advocating Indirect Primaries Have No Courage To Face Their People

September 3, 2018

"Indirect Primaries is a political stock exchange and at the same time a slave market. Indirect Primaries will ignite revolt and uprising in the party. Those advocating for indirect primaries have no courage and confidence to face their people," he said.

SShehu Sani, the senator representing Kaduna Central at the National Assembly, has expressed support for the decision of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to conduct direct primaries for all elective positions in the party.

He disclosed this in a press statement made available to SaharaReporters on Sunday in Abuja, where he described the indirect primaries process as "labour room and incubator for corruption in Nigeria’s political space".

He said: "I stand by the decision of the APC NEC and NWC to conduct direct primaries for all the elective positions in the party. Indirect Primaries is a labour room and incubator for corruption in Nigeria’s political space.

"Indirect Primaries is a political stock exchange and at the same time a slave market. Indirect Primaries will ignite revolt and uprising in the party. Those advocating for indirect primaries have no courage and confidence to face their people."

According to Sani, indirect primaries constitute the foundation of materialism and self service in politics. He noted that any attempt to undermine the leadership of Adams Oshiomole and leaders of the party, who remain true and loyal to its moral founding principles, would be resisted.

The statement continued: "The art and political culture of bribing delegates and party executives through indirect primaries is the seed of moral component in Nigeria’s political dynamics, structure and governance.

"If we fight corruption as a government and condone it as a party, then we are moral mulattoes or SAINTAN (Saints + Saitan). We cannot nurture new democratic values founded on the ethos of moral principles and ideals, while retaining a cash and carry political culture."

The senator noted that indirect primaries are the breeding ground and the crèche for the corrupt political class, and commended President Muhammadu Buhari, Adams Oshiomole and other leaders of the party for standing their ground, irrespective of intimidation by dissenting voices.
