National Geological Agency Says Nigeria Can Get 'Low-Level Earth Tremors' But Not Earthquake

September 7, 2018

“Nigeria is not on the boundary that can make us suffer an earthquake. Hence, we might just get low-level earth tremors,” the DG NGSA said.

Despite reports of earth tremors in Abuja, Nigeria is not in the boundary of suffering an earthquake, Alex Nwegbu, Director-General of the National Geological Survey Agency, said on Friday

Nwegbu stated that the agency, upon receiving reports of tremors in the country’s capital, had sent geoscientists to find out the cause.[story_link align="left"]62634[/story_link]

“Once the reports of tremors were received, National Geological Survey Agency dispatched Geo scientists to ascertain the cause," he said.

"These determined that the earth tremors were of low intensity. Nigeria is not on the boundary that can make us suffer an earthquake. Hence, we might just get low-level earth tremors."

He urged residents to remain calm, and also informed the general public to alert the agency to report incidents of geological hazards by calling any of these numbers: 08035956056, 08023154825, and 08037000623.[story_link align="left"]62636[/story_link]

There have been various reports of earth tremors in Maitama, Utako and Mpape areas of Abuja.

According to residents of these areas and NGSA, the tremor has been happening since the evening of Wednesday, September 5, 2018.
