A speeding Abuja-bound train crushed 52 cows to death in Kasarami-Jere axis in Chikkun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Mallam Ahmad Abdulrahaman, Commissioner of Police of the Kaduna State Police Command, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday.

He also debunked claims that the animals were attacked.

According to Abdulrahaman, “There is nothing like attack but purely a train accident. So nobody should panic”, just as he noted that no human casualty was recorded.

He also stated that the incident happened around 11:45am on Sunday, and was as the result of an accident involving a speeding train on its way to Abuja from Rigasa Railway Station. The herdsmen were on their way to Katsina.

He said: “When the information of the accident reached the command, I quickly mobilised our men to the scene to assess the situation.

“They innocently inquired on whether there were rail services on Sunday, but were misinformed that there was none.

“It was when they were half way that a fast moving train from Rigasa Station on the way to Abuja approached.

“I have summoned the traditional rulers of the area, youths and farmers on the need to continue to live in peace and to avoid crossing the rail track indiscriminately with farm produce and animals.”
