BREAKING: Court Orders FG To Pay N10m Compensation To Jones Abiri

Giving his ruling in Abuja on Thursday, Judge Nnamdi Dimgba noted that Abiri's prolonged detention was an infringement on his rights.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) to pay N10 million as compensation to Bayelsa-based journalist, Jones Abiri.

Abiri was arrested by the DSS in 2016 on allegations bothering on national security, and eventually arraigned two years after, following public outrage on his prolonged detention.

Giving his ruling in Abuja on Thursday, Judge Nnamdi Dimgba noted that Abiri's prolonged detention was an infringement on his rights.

According to Dimgba, as soon as the DSS took Abiri's statement, "he should have been arraigned".

He said specifically that there was no basis for his detention.
