Despite calls to the contrary by stakeholders, the Bayelsa State House Assembly has given expedited passage to the executive bill presented by Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson on the establishment of a medical university in the state.

At a public hearing in August, stakeholders had kicked against the Bayelsa State House of Assembly passing the bill into law due to what they described as paucity of funds to run the already established institutions.

Drawn from the Nigerian Medical Association, Nigeria Bar Association, Civil Liberties Organisation, among others, the stakeholders disagreed with the establishment of a medical university, on the premise that the existing medical school is in dire financial need.

However, despite the consensus at the public hearing, the house went ahead to give expedited passage to the executive bill presented by the governor.

Dickson signed the bill, with two bills passed by the Bayelsa State House of Assembly into law which are the Corporate Social Responsibility Law 2018, and the New Yenagoa City Development Law 2018.
