The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested a man, who ingested 80 wraps of methamphetamine at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

NDLEA said that the 55-year-old man identified as Kouassi Jean Paul, is also known as Eze Ikechukwu.

He was arrested at the airport during the outward clearance of passengers on Ethiopian Airline flight to Jakarta, Indonesia.

According to NDLEA Commander at the Lagos Airport, Garba Ahmadu, Ikechukwu was arrested based on suspicion by some of its officers on duty.

He explained that the suspect exposed himself after behaving suspiciously on sighting the officers of the command, adding that this prompted them to carry out thorough examination on him, which proved positive.

Ikechukwu was immediately taken to the examination room and later to the hospital where he excreted 79 wraps of the ingested drugs, while the last one refused to come out of him.

Ahmadu said it took a thorough exercise by the medical officers of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital to save Ikechukwu’s life.

He said the suspect would be arraigned in court before the end of the week.

Ikechukwu, while speaking with journalists, confessed to the crime.

He, however, said that he was a trader at Alaba International Market and attributed his involvement in drug trafficking to the “act of the devil and hardship”.

Apart from Ikechukwu, 63 other drug couriers were apprehended at the same airport between January and August this year.
