Fire Razes Market In Delta State, Destroys Valuables

The early morning fire, SaharaReporters learnt, destroyed several shops and warehouses in the market and lasted several hours before the arrival of firefighters.

Items worth millions of naira were on Tuesday destroyed by fire at Ogbeogonogo Market in Asaba, capital city of Delta State.

A trader, who witnessed the incident and simply identified himself as Ngozi, told our correspondent that the damage caused by the fire cannot be ascertained.

She said, "The fire started early in the morning when traders were still at home. And before the fire service men could come for rescue, the fire had damaged properties worth millions of naira. My shop was also affected by the fire and no one knows the real cause of the fire.”

As at the time of the incident, the police force were seen on ground maintaining law and order.

Spokesperson for the police in Delta State, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, confirmed the situation, saying the police and personnel of the state fire service were on top of the situation.
