Rosheed was declared guilty by the judge, Sikiru Oyinloye, following his plea bargain.
A 21-year-old student of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Olaleye Rosheed has been convicted for internet fraud by a High Court in Ilorin, Kwara State.
The Ilorin command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) secured the conviction of Olaleye who was sentenced to one year in prison.
Rosheed was declared guilty by the judge, Sikiru Oyinloye, following his plea bargain.
In his judgement, Justice Oyinloye said he had considered the facts and circumstances of the case, most especially the lone count and the plea of guilt entered by the defendant.
He affirmed that he also looked at the defendant’s extrajudicial statements and unchallenged testimonies of the sole prosecution witness before convicting Rosheed.
The court held that the prosecution had succeeded in proving its case beyond reasonable doubt and found the defendant guilty of the allegation levelled against him.
Rosheed was sentenced to one-year imprisonment with an option of a N200,000 fine, adding that the iPhone recovered from the defendant should be forfeited to the Nigerian government.
“That you, Olaleye Rosheed (Christiana Lopez) sometime in January, pretended to be one Christiana Lopez, a white female with a Gmail account, [email protected]. You thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 95 of the penal code and punishable under section 324 of the same law,” he said.
Rosheed had pleaded guilty to the offence when one count bordering on fraud was read to him.
