She was reportedly starved and left without care in the Sokoto-Silma area within the metropolis.

It was learnt that the girl and her relations moved to Sokoto from Akwa Ibom state.

A neighbour of the girl's guardians, Chimezie Anyawu disclosed that the girl was rescued by divine providence.

Anyawu also said the girl's guardians have been living a secretive life. He added that they avoided relating freely with neighbours.

He said, "It was yesterday that some kids were playing near the box where the girl was caged.

"Incidentally, they fell on the cage and it dismantled; behold a pale looking human being was seen and mistaken for a ghost.

"I got to hear of it; I came in and confronted my neighbour's wife, who simply responded that the girl was caged because he was insane.

"However, I protested that even if she was insane, why cage her like an animal? So, I decided to report the matter to the police.”

The girl told reporters that she had lost hope of ever surviving because she “lived without food or water for the period she was caged”.

The Commissioner of Police in Sokoto State, CP Kola Okunlola, confirmed the incident and vowed to prosecute the offenders.

Also commenting, Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs in the state, Kulu Abdullahi, said the girl was receiving treatment at Sokoto University Teaching Hospital.
