A civil society group, Nigerian Youth Initiative for Good Governance (NYIGG), has called on Nigerians, market women, students, children above 15years to join its planned protest against the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele, if he fails to resign within the next three days.

According to NYIGG, doing so will save the nation from further economic meltdown.

The Publicity Secretary of the group, David Tolutope accused Emefiele of “incompetence and pitiable handling of monetary and fiscal policies which have worsened the nation’s economy with proofs in inflation, weakened naira among other economic defects.”

Tolutope added that every well-meaning Nigerian must join the protest for the immediate resignation of Godwin Emefiele as CBN governor to save Nigeria from the current economic downturn his incompetence and defective economic policies has occasioned.

“This is a patriotic fight to save the soul of our dear country, to end the current economic downturn that the incompetence and bad economic policies of Mr Emefiele have brought on all of us. Consequently, we call on well-meaning Nigerians; market women, students, children above the age of 15years to join our planned protest, should the CBN governor continue to remain in office beyond our three-day ultimatum. “In saner climes, with the negative turn of events, the continued rise in dollars against the naira, the biting inflation that has left many Nigerians in penury and the economic recession under his watch, Mr Emefiele shouldn’t have waited for our call before toeing the honourable path of resignation, so as to pave way for a more competent person with the economic blueprint and the wherewithal to effectively and efficiently oversee our economic policies.”

The group also thanked Nigerians for their unfailing support and further urged them to continue to remain calm and peaceful as they wait for the expiration of its three-day ultimatum.

“We will communicate you again on the next move when our 3-days ultimatum expires”, he added.

The group further called on President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate the N500billion which was stolen in a private Dubai investment towards the end of 2018 as well as other funds that went missing during Emefiele’s administration. SaharaReporters had in May 2019 made public a phone conversation of Emefiele; his deputy, Edward Lametek Adamu; Director for Finance, Dayo M. Arowosegbe and one of the Special Advisers to the CBN Governor, Emmanuel Ukeje discussing how to cover up the loss of over N500 billion stolen from the CBN in a private investment that collapsed.

Two audio files, exclusively obtained by SaharaReporters, revealed how the governor and top officials of the apex bank discussed plots to conceal the loss of huge sums of money in a Dubai investment.

The CBN claimed the audio conversation was genuine but no money was missing from the bank.

Isaac Okorafor, Director Corporate Communications had said: “The selective conversation being circulated was simply a discussion to ascertain why the auditors took that position and next steps to resolve it.

Obviously, it soon became clear that a state government's loan cannot be classified as 'bad' or 'irrecoverable' when the state still exists and getting FAAC allocations.”

However, in a petition written by Emefiele to the Inspector-General of Police, he confirmed that the audio was authentic and this time raised the alarm that his phone had been bugged and that there was a breach of security at the apex bank.

He also asked the police to investigate the audio leak.
